Preliminary results of a national e-survey of Extension professionals conducted in 2005 are presented. The results rank 35 skills that Extension professionals indicate they need to strengthen to conduct more effective PIE programs. The top ten skills Extension professionals prioritized for improvement include: Help participants move sequentially from problem definition to problem resolution; Help participants define and agree on the problem to be solved; Help participants engage in collaborative decision-making; Help participants separate their interests from their positions; Help participants incorporate diverse viewpoints about public issues into their own decisions; Understand methods for evaluating program impacts; Help participants interact with diverse stakeholders; Help participants evaluate and apply scientific data to resolve a public issue; Protect participants and their ideas from personal attack during discussions and; Understand criteria for evaluating program impacts. The PIE Team will use the survey results to develop curricula and trainings to strengthen these identified skills.
