Economic development at the local level can be a complex task. The effort may include community planning and assessment of resources, identification of viable economic options, and direct assistance for existing or potential firms and businesses.

The co-presenters have a history of joint efforts to produce tools to aid in local development efforts. The tools have been field-tested in Idaho and Oklahoma as well as other states. Lessons learned and best-practices will be shared.

This proposal builds on previous shorter presentations in the field and will provide hands-on experiences for the session participants. Materials and resources will be provided both in hardcopy and web-based.

Specific topics addressed will include methods to identify local business opportunities, options dealing with creation, attraction, and retention/expansion. A community systems approach will be emphasized focusing on local resources and assets. Examples of tools presented include target industry analysis, feasibility studies, entrepreneurial development assistance, and economic development planning.
